ANMA History

ANMA is an organization of Nepalese and friends of Nepal in North America, particularly in the Midwest region of the United States. It is the first regional organization, founded in 1982 in Chicago, Illinois and subsequently incorporated as a non-profit tax exempt organization in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1989.

The major activities of ANMA, for years, has been to serve the Nepalese community by holding yearly conventions in cities, primarily of the Midwest region of the United States during the Memorial day weekend. These yearly conventions have provided opportunities for resident Nepalese and friends of Nepal to mingle, get to know each other, enjoy the various cultural/social/sporting activities, discuss important issues related to Nepal and the concerns of the second generation Nepalese growing up in US.

Many dedicated members of ANMA, for years, have been actively involved in the service of the Nepalese community by providing intellectual and monetary help. ANMA, as an organization, has also provided timely help to various natural disasters in Nepal.

Since the inception of ANMA in 1982, many Nepalese local, regional and Nepal- related associations have evolved, as the Nepalese community in North America continues to grow. Due to lack of a national organization to provide forum for coordination of activities that were of mutual interest to these organizations, ANMA took a lead role in organizing the First National convention of Nepalese and friends of Nepal in North America at the University of Maryland, Maryland on May 25-26, 1991 with full participation of eight other Nepalese and Nepal related associations. This convention was followed by the establishment of Nepalese Americas Council.
