23rdAnnual ANMA Convention
May 29 - May 30, 2004 -- Columbus, Ohio
Theme: Bringing Our Cultures Together
We are very pleased to bring the 23rd Annual Conference
of the Association of Nepalese in the Midwest America, for which
Columbus has been selected as the host city based on its multicultural
diversity. It is with great pleasure that the Nepali-American Organization
of Ohio (NAOO) cordially requests the honor of your presence at this
conference. The event will be held at Radisson Inn in Worthington during
Memorial Day weekend (May 29 - 30, 2004).
The program, organized by NAOO, is hosted for the second time in Columbus,
after eight years. It is designed to celebrate as well as to critically
discuss educational, political, and cultural issues relevant to Nepal as
well as Nepali-American experiences in the Midwest. The conference will be
attended by several hundreds Nepalis as well as friends of the Nepali
community from all over the United States. The events include a variety of
cultural performances of dance, poetry readings, and drama and will bring
interested writers, scholars, and artists in the community. Further, an
exciting forum related to Nepal-US economic, political, and cultural
partnerships would be part of this event.
Since the 1960s, thousands of Nepalis from the Himalayan kingdom have made
central Ohio their home. The Nepali community has grown dramatically
within the last decade, further adding to the multicultural nature of
Columbus. Whether as civil servants, educators, small business owners,
doctors or musicians, Nepali-Americans continue to actively participate
in civic activities in Columbus. Members of Nepali-American community have
been active in promoting issues on Nepal as well as the history and
experiences of Nepali-Americans in local schools and organizations. We are
confident that this event will enable us to share the rich cultural and
ethnic heritage with the larger Columbus community.
Your presence during this event will be a true honor for the Nepali-Americans
and a significance marker of celebrating Columbus’ cultural diversity. We
very much look forward to welcoming you at the event.
Association of Nepalese in Midwest America (ANMA) is a social
organization founded in 1982 in Chicago, Illinois for the Nepali immigrants,
people of Nepali origin and the friends of Nepal in North America,
particularly in the Midwest region of the United States. ANMA was
subsequently incorporated as a non-profit tax-exempt organization in
Cincinnati, Ohio in 1989. Since 1982, ANMA has been very active in serving
needs of people of Nepali origin by organizing social and charitable
activities, preserving and promoting Nepali culture, and providing platforms
to discuss important issues related to Nepal and the concerns of the
second generation Nepalis growing up in US.
Every year, ANMA organizes its annual Nepali Convention in different cities
in the United States. The list of cities that have hosted ANMA conventions
in the past include Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Washington DC, Detroit,
Cincinnati and Minneapolis.
The main objectives of ANMA Conventions are to preserve Nepali identity,
culture, religion, languages and traditions. It also provides Nepali youth
with opportunities to participate and compete in various sporting events
such as Midwest soccer, basketball, table tennis and volleyball tournaments.
Above all, it provides Nepalis and Friends of Nepal opportunities to meet,
and to discuss and exchange ideas for mutual benefits.
